Excerpt from the Introduction to Disability Deception:
" In 1984 my daughter Angelina who had a disability turned three years old, and began to receive special education services, through my local school district. It was at that time that I was told the first lie by special education personnel. The person stated that "If Angelina was to get therapy, I had to pay for it." Being a parent who didn't know my rights, Angelina received no therapy for several months, which caused her to lose the progress that she had made in the Early Intervention System (EIS). Another parent finally told me about parental and student rights, and I was able to get the school district to pay for Angelina's needed therapies. I have been lied to many times over the years, both for my own children, and when I am advocating for other peoples children. Sometimes I immediately recognized that I was being lied to, and other times did not. That is why I decided to write this book; to help a new generation of parents recognize when some special education personnel are lying to them--and also how parents can beat educators at their own game, for the benefit of their child."
Disability Deception is written in a parent friendly way and is easy to understand.

New testimonial: 1. "Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! I have had this book in my possession now for a couple of months, and it couldn't have come at a better time. Not having a lot of knowledge on how the Education Department, teachers, and schools in general conduct themselves at IEP meetings, this book has become my new Bible! It's easy to read, easy to understand and has a plethera of information that any parent cannot do without. I would recommend this book to anyone. . . I only wish that your book and yourself was more exposed. Do you also do seminars and presentations Ms. Collins?. . . The most honest and useful book I have read in a long time." L. S. GA
2. Doug from California writes: "Ms Collins has written a handbook every special education parent needs to read. An experienced and effective advocate, the author gives a step by step walk through of all the necessary highly complicated procedures for obraining legitimate services. Unlike any other material on this subject, Ms. Collins' premise is fundamentally and importantly different. To wit; parents are systematically and deliberately mislead and lied to by school officials. . . As Ms. Collins points out over and over again, the parent not the school is the one who pushes for the child, the party who pushes for the implementation of real necessary services, and not the all too often insufficient support the schools wish to get away with. . . A call to arms, Disability Deception is required reading. . . A handbook for all parents or guardians of special education children. Disability Deception gives them an enormous plus in their efforts for their children, an advantage they would never otherwise enjoy. Don't hesitiate--buy it!!"
3. M. F. from California writes: "Disability Deception is a must read for every parent that has a child in special education. I could not put this book down. I read it cover to cover. I had to use a highlighter and a pen to put personal notes in the margins. I agree with everything that was written, because unfortunately, I have had similar experiences working with my school district. Thanks JoAnn for telling us the real truth!"
4. C.P. from Virginia writes: "Disability Deception is a must have for parents and advocates that need honest and truthful information about what the school districts don't want you to know about your rights. . . The personal struggles shared in the book left me humble and honered that Ms. Collins was willing to share so much of her personal struggles. This book truly inspires all people, who support children with special education needs to fight for what is right. I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs resources, and support in advocating for special needs children. A job well done, Thank You!"
5. M.H. from California writes: "I was surprised to learn of this book whose title openly acknowledges something that I deal with on a regular basis. I have long bemoaned the fact that there is so little information and a lack of published guidelines on how to deal with the lies and fraudelent schemes that I regularly encounter from our school district. . . I was able to identify with JoAnn Collins' description of initially being shocked when she found out for the first time that she had trustingly believed what turned out to be a blatant lie from a caring professional--which deprived her daughter of needed services. . . I believe that her book should be read by every parent with a child that has a disability affectiving his or her education.
